You are Your Social Media - How to Put your Best Foot Forward

Putting your best foot forward with social media

As the saying goes, if you wouldn’t want your grandma to see it, you probably shouldn’t put it on social media. Sixty percent of employers are researching candidates through social media. If eyes are the window to your soul then social media is the window into your life. Here are a few steps to make your social media presence shine!

Clean it up! You’ll want to make sure your profiles are free from derogatory words and photos. Keep your partying pictures to a minimum. Employers understand you have a social life but make sure it doesn’t look like that’s your only life. Don’t bad-mouth your former employers. If you’ll bad mouth that company, potential employers probably think you’ll bad mouth them as well. Bottom line – keep things clean.

Showcase your personality! Social media is a wonderful platform to showcase who you are, what you love and what you believe. What a great tool for employers to develop a better understanding of who you are as a person. Twenty-nine percent of employers have offered candidates a position after finding something on a candidate’s profile they’ve liked.

Feature your work! Especially if you’re in an industry that requires creativity, use social media as a platform to showcase your work. Providing examples of work on your social media platforms also shows you’re qualified for the position you’re applying for and can give employers more insight into your work.

Be active! Don’t sign up for a social account just to be a lurker, take part, post regularly and engage in the conversations happening. If you’re in industry groups, be a resource, answers other users’ question, provide industry updates. Make yourself look like an expert and what benefits you could bring to your potential teammates.

Next time you’re on social media, give your own accounts an audit. Make sure everything is clean and appropriate. Check to ensure your content aligns with your personality and showcases your best self and work. Launch your job search now with our full list of opportunities online!
