3 Ways to Set Yourself Apart From Other Candidates

The job hunt can be hard especially when there are so many other people vying for the same job you are. Despite your work experience or education, your interview can help set you apart from others that have similar backgrounds. In the end, how you communicate and verbalize can give you that edge over the rest.

Show your enthusiasm for the opportunity at hand

No matter the business, they want to know you are excited for the possibility of a future with their company. Although you came to the interview, that doesn’t necessarily show your interest in the position. Express your interest whenever it seems appropriate. If the interviewer brings up a certain job aspect, tell them why you are interested in that part of the job and why it piques your interest. At the end of the day, all things considered equal, the company is going to choose the person they feel is the most excited about the position.

Be thorough with your responses

This might seem like an obvious tip but you would be surprised how many people leave questions unanswered. The interviewer is looking for more than a one sentence answer. Elaborate and don’t make them dig for what they are looking for. If they ask about how you manage your time, don’t just say you make a schedule. Go into details about how you prioritize, how you adjust if something comes up, and what you do if your time runs out.

Be determined yet flexible

Although this sounds counterproductive, a candidate should always have goals, just not goals that are so rigid that they are limiting themselves. Although this job may just be a stepping stone in the right direction for your future career path, you don’t want to miss the opportunity because your 5 year plan may not align with their company. All employers want to know that you are seeking growth to better yourself and help the company, but not just to climb the ranks. Be open with your goals and dreams, but also express a sense of flexibility and openness to new opportunities.

Interviews can be intimidating. If you are confident in your skillset and what you can bring to the company, there is nothing to be worried about. By keeping an open mind, being thorough during your interview, and always being open to new ideas, you can make a huge impact on the interviewer.
