Decreasing Stress in the Workplace

Work can be a surprisingly stressful place.  In honor of Stress Awareness Month, the experts at Skywalk Group are helping you determine if you are stressed at work and then addressing that stress with eight great de-stress tips that you can put into action at work today!

Are you stressed at work?

  1. Do you have over 30 projects currently on your plate?  For many of us, that number is closer to 100!

  2. Are you interrupted multiple times in just 1 hour?  Statistics say most workers are interrupted 7 times per hour on average.

  3. Is your company experiencing major restructuring?  In today’s corporate environment, most companies are going through at least some restructuring with an unclear future.

  4. Do you lose sleep over thoughts of stressful work events?  Over 40 percent of adults currently lie awake stressing about work tasks.

Managing Work Stress

  1. Take care of yourself – try adjusting your diet so that you are consuming less sugar and more protein in addition to getting plenty of sleep.

  2. Think positive – don’t be too hard on yourself.  Replace your negative, critical thoughts with positive, motivating thoughts.

  3. Motivate others – much of the stress you carry is caused by a problem coworker.  Be proactive in helping that coworker adopt a more positive attitude.

  4. Prioritize – instead of looking at your tasks as a whole, identify the tasks that will have the most impact and focus on completing those first.

  5. It’s all about perception – focus on the work itself instead of who you’re trying to impress or what others think of your work.  Also, put things in perspective and look at work events more objectively and less personally.

  6. Act, not react – When stressed, take a moment to identify what you can control such as your own actions and response.  Let go of what you can’t control.

  7. Limit interruptions – decide ahead of time how you will respond to interruptions and stick to those responses in order to stay on task.

  8. Plan for focused, energetic times – schedule brakes, stretch and do breathing exercises to break up the day and control your energy levels.

If you start incorporating these eight actions into your life today, we are confident you will not only be less stressed at work – you will feel great and look forward to those once stressful situations.  If you’d like to know more about stress management or other development opportunities we have available, visit the Skywalk Group training page now.
