Hiring Via Video Conference
You’ve gone through stacks of resumes, answered countless emails and fielded numerous calls. But, the one candidate who stands out the most to you doesn’t live anywhere close. In fact, you’d have to pay for a plane ticket just to have the interview. These kinds of hiring expenses usually aren’t accounted for or in the budget.
Luckily, we live in an age where we can have face-to-face conversations even if we live on the other side of the globe. But is hiring someone over video conference really the best way to go? Yes! Here are some things to keep in mind:
Use a laptop
A candidate will want to have a good idea of what their work space will be like, and this is a perfect opportunity to give him or her a virtual tour. They can ask questions as you go, and maybe even meet a few of their potential co-workers. Plus, this is a great opportunity to see what your company culture is actually like!
Set up screen share
This will allow them to see some of the project management software you use, as well as other things pertinent to their day-to-day work life. You can even walk them through what a typical work day or workload looks like.
Observe their surroundings
What you see in their screen could tell you a lot about them as a worker. Do they seem messy or organized? Are they conducting the interview in public or in private? Do they dress as if they are in a person-to-person interview, or are they in tee-shirts and jeans? These little clues can paint a picture about the candidate as an employee.
