Speaking their Language: Four Steps to Recruit Millennials

Steps to recruit millennials

As millennials become the dominating force in the American workplace, have you stopped to think about how your company is speaking to this generation? Understanding what recruits are looking for in their career is key to speaking their language. Here are four steps to better recruit millennials your company can start with today!

Stress the Meaningful Work

Be transparent with them on how the work you do is, on some level, impactful. Showcase the work they’ll be doing every day is more than just pushing papers but will affect the bottom line and make a difference. If you still aren’t sure how your company would fit into this, try focusing on things like customer service, community involvement and how their role in the company can impact all of that.

Engage the Employee

We can all agree monotonous and boring work can get the best of anyone. Keeping young employees engaged should be a priority since only 29 percent of millennial employees say they’re engaged in their job. Look for ways to show appreciation for the work they’re doing, provide regular feedback so they know what they’re doing well and what needs improvement and allow for flexibility.

Create a Culture

A company’s culture can make or break what a millennial recruit thinks of you. Don’t skimp on sharing culture on social media. Use it as a tool to not only post jobs but to show what it’s really like to work at your company. More than likely a job seeker won’t know all there is to know about the organization and they’ll look to the web for answers. Make sure it’s an answer you’d be proud to provide.

Jump on Job-Hopping

Employees staying at a company for 1-3 years is becoming more common in the workplace. Millennials will seek out jobs where they feel recognized for the work they do and once that feeling has dissipated they’ll be on the hunt for the next job to showcase their talents. Make sure there’s room for advancement, they’re looking to move within your organization and if there’s no room to do so, they’ll go open their own door.

At the end of the day, remember the millennial generation is a talented pool of industry professionals looking to take on the world, you just need to understand where they’re coming from and where they’re going.
